Well, I would say.. First- Publishing companies pay and make site crawlable to get business and clickthroughs. it would be benificial for small companie's to get paid to get their content removed but it does not make sence as at the end of the day Bigger domain are where actually the large click data is available. Microsoft must be using the payback technique but in some other form.

Yes, The WAR for crawlable data is already ON.. on a more smaller scale. if we actually sit and analyze, then providing the BEST results for Keyword searched, is already a PRIORITY from long, rather from the day Search engines came in to the picture...

More to come...!!

Microsoft "plans" are shameful... what else one could expect from them? The internet is great because of the freedom of choice. What Microsoft is trying to do is what it has done to OS and software... monopolize. Google is the top one because it works well and does not restrict choice, what Microsoft is trying to do is probably going to backfire and end up in court. I cerntainly hope it does!

With the current economic conditions this could be an interesting upcoming year in the search engine marketplace. We all know that Microsoft is a very aggressive corporation in the software market, but can they really overtake the giant behemoth know as Google?

In my opinion I don't think they can overtake Google overall but they may be able to dictate the way Google does business going forward.

I agree with Gregg that consumers want one centralized location for their content and information and not many different smaller spin off sites. In a reality it may just give Google the opportunity to push harder to create the ultimate experience for search engine users and increase their market share even more.

2010 will definitely be an interesting year in the search engine and internet marketing arena for sure.

This is insane. Microsoft is amazing at finding new reasons for people to hate and boycott them.

I don't see how this can last. Companies have websites so people will visit them...why would they want to accept a payoff to not receive visitors? You know eventually the money will stop flowing from Microsoft and then those companies that signed on to them will have lost a large number of visits. Then they will be back at square one trying to get people to know about and visit their websites. They would be crazy to sign up for such a thing.

May be a win for _some_ bloggers and news writers, but overall seems like this kind of thing would spell disaster for end users. Why would I want to go to healthyengine.com when everything else I search for is already on google.com??? I don't want a million different search engines to find everything I'm looking for. The compelling feature of Google and other search engines like Bing and Yahoo should be ease of use and a centralized place to go to find anything else I might be looking for. Not bing for fox news, google for cnn, yahoo for whatever else.

If this kind of behavior keeps up, search engines in general will become far less useful for finding information.

How about instead of Microsoft spending millions to make their search results appear (artificially) better than Google's, they spend that same money to create better search algorithms? That's real competition, and would ultimately be much more beneficial to consumers (the important people, remember??).
