CRO is to a website what billing’s is to a departmental store. It doesn’t matter how many people enter the store and look around, what matters is how many people walk out through the billing counter. Just like having a crowded store with window shoppers is futile so is being the number 1 on search engine listing with low conversion rate. In this highly competitive market, converting visitors into customers is very essential to be successful. Here are some tips for further conversions-

1 Picking the most relevant keyword

When planning your SEO strategy, be sure you choose the most relevant keywords. Being number one on search engine list should not be your only goal, make sure it’s for the relevant keywords. Make your SEO plan on both axis company goals and time frame.

2. Analyzing your search ranking and exploring other keywords-

Regularly analyze your SERP, to understand how much progress you are making in how much time. Explore other keywords that you could use so that your website is available to customers even when they enter various keywords.

3. Enhancing your content

Having completed your SEO target and a good SERP, the battle is not over yet. There is always room for improvement. So enhance the content on your website so that it doesn’t become obsolete.

4. Testing your user-interface-

Just like a scornful billing teller can put you off, and leave a bad memory. Similarly, bad user interface can shun customers from your website. Your user interface should be simple and easy to use. Special care needs to be taken while asking for personal information like address, telephone number, credit card details etc. The user interface should instill confidence and trust in the customer.

5. Different offers and schemes for different kind of customers

If you are not a website that serves a niche market, and has a relatively vast client base. Then it is imperative that you have different offers and schemes for different types of customers. This would include various budgetary schemes for different income groups, different combination of products/services to give your customers options.

Remember, there is no one key to attract more customers. It is a combination of many tactics that can vary from one website to another. Also what may appeal to one customer may be different to what appeals to the other. In such a scenario, providing the best of what you can is a must.

Giving free advice is easier said than done. At Galaxy Weblinks Ltd., we take care of all your internet marketing needs, from SEO to CRO. With qualified professionals and a dedicated team we work meticulously on each detail for your website’s success.

Web marketing involves many strategies and the toughest rivalry exists between PPC and SEO. In case you work on one of the two web sectors you know what we are discussing here. One is not better than the other; it is just how well PPC or SEO serves the real purpose and works hard to gain revenues for the companies.

We are always interested in the pros and cons of a particular service we wish to use. It is important for a business firm to understand the working and benefits of these facilities of online marketing. Well your wish is granted as we discuss the benefits and the detriments of both these web techniques for marketing.

For the first timers PPC, pay per click is the paid advertisement appearing on the sides or bottom of the web pages that takes the users to your website. This method can be a quick way to get the flow of traffic towards your page. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process to get your site enlisted in the search engine result pages (SERPs) through web optimization. These two are completely different methods to channel the browsers in the direction of your web pages.

The bright side of PPC is that it is simple and rapid way to set an advertisement campaign working on the web. The apt use of keywords will get your ad and the revenues rolling on the same day as it is posted. This tactic is much easier when compared to the in-depth research and work required for SEO process. There are numerous search engines like Yahoo, Bing, Google and many similar interfaces that offer the PPC services. Many people would prefer this mode of approach to get profits right away.

The darker shade of PPC is visible when you pay high prices for availing these services. Every click has its price, so in due course you may not get desired results through this approach. Competition is the main drawback here as the auctioning process to get the best keywords can be a costly affair. SEO does not involve such challenges.

Playing by the search engine rules, running the race for indexing and page ranking has just move the bar of web marketing to a new high in these past years. The SEO has a slow and steady progress and when your site is older it gets better. Websites come to the internet to be the long term player, whereas you cannot say the same thing for PPC. Even after few months your favorite blog or website can be found through a regular search, but an ad could be gone in few days or as per the changing trends and rates.

Marketing approaches are fighting with each other on the cost criteria and same is with SEO and PPC services. A layman may think these two are sides of the same coin but an expert can tell there is much more to each of these web marketing techniques. The PPC services gets the major benefit of traceability, the number of clicks can be tacked easily. SEO is seen battling with duplicate content, keywords, links, landing pages and URL limitations. In case you use both of these methods for publicizing your products you may have to prevent keyword cannibalization in a more intellectual manner.

Using different resources to achieve the same target makes it easier for us to reach the goal quickly with much ease. Competing with SEO or PPC alone may not take you very far from the beginning site. Learning from various approaches is the best way to conquer the digital marketing field.

A company having both set of teams should work hand in hand to get into organic listings and share their finds as far as terms or strategies are concerned. It will be a win-win situation for your firm and the benefits are bound to reach you in one way or another. Healthy competition is welcome, but only criticizing or showing thumbs down trick to other can lead to loss.

Discussion to execute ideas like the structure of landing pages, overall concept of a campaign, target audiences or research findings on a specific project can be a reason for the whole company to celebrate. Knowing the pros and cons of one another, shielding the drawbacks to overcome them and exploiting the pros for better revenues should be the combined goal of the two teams. Use of various tools to efficiently get the desired results is an essential aim of the company.

The web world is frequently varying and to keep up with the changing trends is the major challenge for all digital marketing companies. In the end, all we want and desire is success to maximum possible extent so go ahead and aim for the stars.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become an inseparable part of internet based marketing. Using the right code, layout and abiding by the search engine rules could be a do or die situation for your website. Canonical refers to a preferred page, out of an entire set of pages with extremely similar content. It prevents spiders from finding and re-indexing your product web pages exhibiting highly similar content.

Duplicate version of your web page is known as the print version. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo penalize website postings that are very analogous as they seem like a copied data to the crawlers. Your website could have products listed and displayed in repeats based on their importance like price, quantity or availability at times. When the search engine is shown that the site is a legitimate part of the original content it will spare the site re-indexing or red flagging process. Rel canonical comes to your rescue when such a problems arise.

Apt use of Rel canonical

Search engines observe every change in your website and its related tags. Without complete know-how, using rel canonical can hurt your well designed and reputed site. Rel canonical is easy to use, but the correct application of this tag makes all the difference. Use rel canonical tag on the print version to direct it towards original page. You can just edit the <head> tag of the page without any modifications in the side of the server.

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have search engines that identify rel canonical tag. The Search engine considers this tag only within a specific domain or sub domains, not across various multiple domains. The complete link set from your canonized page may or may not pass on to the other.

Improved Page navigation

Browsing a site can be improved using rel canonical in cases where redirecting a page would not help. URL format may be the important criteria, as some products require category and sub-category page formats. To prevent risking re-indexing and red flagging of print versions rel canonical tag comes handy.

Checks multiple URL creation

Session IDs are frequently generated and 301 redirects may not be possible in such cases, rel canonical can be put to use here. URLs with tracking code that check link clicks or measure paths can have rel canonical tag. Keep your URLs relevant and sensible, so that adding a rel canonical doesn’t change your visitor graph extensively.

Some rel canonical benefits

In case you have ‘page not found’ error rel canonical will allow indexing of the page during repairs or redesigning of web pages. Search engines following a heuristic approach to find the canonical in case of a 404 error. You should follow the rules as you use rel canonical for relative paths and search engine processes your website in a regular format. Slight differences in your page content may be allowed while using rel canonical you must prevent chain of rel canonical to ascertain optimum canonization.

Rel canonical tag not required for the following:

Novel sites need not have rel canonical. The print version pages can be avoided when you have the opportunity to design it accordingly.

Moving to a single page from a complete site through canonization would not be a smart choice, as it could ruin years of hard work. Search engines de-index such pages and your ranking could be affected on a large scale.

Pagination may not involve repeated content, canonization because there are some techniques to keep crawlers off slightly similar pages.

Wrapping up the guide

Partial knowledge is harmful and this proverb suits best if you are using massively altering tags. After through solution searches if rel canonical is your only way out, use it gradually after repeated analysis and testing. Each search engine has its own way of processing such tags, so well informed use of such tags is recommended.

Everyone wants to compete and enhance their internet property for more pertinent marketing and prevent content duplication. Hence, it is essential that we use rel canonical tag wisely.

A website mainly comprises of several important features, each contributing to the success of this unique online property. However, when analyzing and optimizing your website, one particular area where you should largely focus is its crawlability features.

The success of a website greatly depends on its crawlability features. And hence, if you wish to optimize your website’s ranking and traffic, you should diagnose the various crawling issues. Hence, before you can actually optimize your website, you should diagnose the crawling issues in your site.

Make a simple search on Google, “site:yoursite.com ” and then compare the number of pages displayed on the search engines with the real number of pages in your website. The numbers of pages displayed on Google are an estimation of the number of pages that Google thinks your website includes. Proper comparison will hence help you to have a rough idea about the total number of pages that Google is aware about your website. The details about this estimation have also been discussed by Googler, Matt Cutts in the Webmaster Central video.

Hence, if your website has as many as hundreds and thousands of pages and Google displays just 100 indexed pages, then your site is surely in severe problem. According to the webmasters, an accuracy of around 10 – 30% from the total number of indexed pages, as shown by Google in its results, is perfect for your website.

Apart from this, the next thing that you should focus on is Webmaster Central. In case you submit your website’s sitemap then Google will mention about the number of URLs that you had submitted in your website along with the number of pages that were actually indexed on the search engine. Closer these numbers, better is the result for your website. The comparison between the two numbers needs not be 100 % accurate as many times a few pages added to the sitemap and the website get blocked with just a robot meta tag. However, in the initial conditions, all businessmen are usually concerned only about the overall gross numbers.

Well, in case the things are not in control, then Webmaster Central also provides an option to download the pages in the form of a table. This allows you to diagnose the website on the page by page manner for all the features included in the website.

Once the diagnosis is completed, you then have to crawl into the website completely through a tool named Xenu. The tool also checks broken links while crawling through the website. Apart from Xenu, you can also use Website Auditor and specify the crawling depth of your website. This will help you to know on how intensely you want the bots to go into your website.

In order to check this, you can start the tool from the homepage and then stop at the first level. Once done, run it again and stop at level 2 and repeat it for level 3. Simultaneously, also use the Webmaster Central report into most of the linked pages of your website. Accordingly, if your website’s most crucial pages, particularly the very first 2 to 3 pages don’t include linking hubs then you will surely have problems with your website’s crawling. However, it is most important to add deep links to your website and then spread the link equity, internal trust and also website authority wisely all across your website. In simple words, you need to have a closer look at the last crawling date in Google’s Cache for the better understanding of pages that Google thinks are important.

During this diagnosis, all the webpages that have more links get crawled faster, while the pages that are more trustworthy get normally indexed. Hence, the pages that are linked to these pages are also counted as trustworthy and will surely get crawled within a few days. However, after every linking step, the crawling frequency decreases, very much similar to the pagerank model.

Now select sample pages from different levels and then determine their total crawling frequency rates using tools like Website Auditor. For this, you will require a person who will constantly fill the captcha’s. An alternate method is that of using an outsourcing service, asking them to do the analysis. Also, send them the entire list of URLs and then explain them the process of checking the cache date which should then be stored into the spreadsheet. Also, follow some spot checking with the help of a few trustworthy people.

But, how do you actually know whether your website is in trouble? Or if your website’s pages have 60 days and older crawl dates? Are there any important pages which are not getting crawled by the bots? Well, if you find that your website has certain crawling issues, you should simply find out ways to flatten the website’s hierarchies. Check the pages with link hubs if they are linked to the right content. If possible, spin the older content on the homepage and add better linking hubs. These steps can help you boost your website’s crawling rate.

Since our announcement last week about adding new (and newer) data centers on KPMRS for you to monitor your websites’ ranks in your country, we have been flooded with requests from our users to include new data centers in our service. A few of them -

You mentioned that if you receive the minimum threshold of requests that you might look at adding additional countries to your list. Well…here goes a long shot… How about South Africa? That would be lovely if this can be added to your database. But again, it was a long shot! Thanks for the support service you offer!! Keep up the good work.

Louis van Wyk

Spain, please.

Vicente

So, we decided to do a little poll about which new countries would our users – you – like us to monitor your rankings for? Well, here’s your chance to have your say and make it count!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

These are the list of the countries for which we already got some votes. If you don’t see your country in the list, please contact us.

I should mention, however, that the feasibility of including new data centers may not be completely dependent on these poll results. Of course, we’ll be analyzing demographic data to ensure that the service reaches as early as possible to those who would really be facilitated by it. So, if your country is a little low on votes, you might want to consider giving a shout out to SEO professionals of your region to give you a hand . By the way, the social populararity buttons are right below this post.

Looking forward to more such opportunities to serve you better. Stay tuned to The KPMRS Blog by subscribing to our feed!

SEO(Search Engine Optimization) is such a broad term that whatever activity drives traffic on to your website, is considered as an SEO Activity. Earlier, we as the SEO Consultants used to focus specifically on the structure and content of websites only. We strived hard to make sure our clients’ websites have been set up right with proper title, meta text, content placement, image names etc. But today, the definition of SEO has changed. Now, SEO as a service is divided into 2 types -

1. On-Page SEO – optimize content, internal links, meta tags etc

2. Off-page SEO – backlinks, social media, forum posting, press release etc.

But I don’t agree with the later one. There is nothing called as Off-page SEO. You may call it “Off-page promotions” or “Off-page optimization” but “Off-page SEO” definitely does not make sense to me. Wikipedia defines SEO as – the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.

Then why is everyone writing so much about “Off-page SEO” when the term does not exist at all? I leave this up to you to help me find the answer in the comments below.

Just because, it is such a popular term these days, I could not stop myself from using it as the title of my blog article even though I don’t agree with it. This is also one of the problem with SEO Consultants & business owners like us – we have to keep our readers/customers happy with giving them what they want to take.

So coming back to the topic of today’s discussion, which is about some of the best “Off-page SEO” tactics or “Off-page Promotion” (for my own sake) that can help you drive consistent traffic on to your website for a long run. These

1.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has become such a broad term today that whichever activity drives any traffic on your website is considered as an SEO Activity! In earlier days, we – as SEO Consultants - used to focus specifically on the structure and content of websites only, which we called “On-page SEO”. We tried hard to make sure that our clients’ websites have been set up right with proper page titles, meta text, content placement, image names etc. But today, the definition of SEO has changed expanded drastically. Now-a-days, SEO as a service is divided into 2 categories :-

On-Page SEO - optimize content, internal links, meta tags etc

Off-page SEO - backlinks, social media, forum posting, press release etc.

Honestly, I don’t agree with the concept of Off-page SEO. You may call it ‘Off-page promotions’ or ‘Off-page optimization’ but ‘Off-page SEO’ definitely does not make sense to me. Wikipedia defines SEO as

the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via natural or un-paid (organic or algorithmic) search results.

Then why is everyone writing so much about “Off-page SEO” when, ideally, the term even doesn’t exist at all? I leave this up to you all to help me find the answer in your comments below.

Just because it is such a popular term these days, I could not stop myself from using it as the title of my blog article even though I don’t agree with it This is also one of the problems with SEO Consultants & business owners like us – that we have to keep our readers/customers happy with giving them what they want to take!

Coming back to the topic of today’s discussion, which is about the best “Off-page SEO” tactics or “Off-page Promotion” (for my own sake) that can help you drive consistent traffic on to your website for a long run. These techniques are just the ones which I have tried myself and achieved reasonable success for my clients. You may have tried something else which worked for you so don’t hesitate to share that with our readers.

1. Participate in Forums & discussion boards: 5-6 responses or 2-3 new questions a day (with your website’s URL in the signature) in 5 different popular forums a day is all that it will take to get a decent traffic on to your website. It will hardly take you more than 2 minutes to write a response or come up with a question to ask the community. Spending 20 minutes a day religiously on forums for 2 weeks will start generating traffic on your website that you won’t even imagine. Of course, you need to make sure that your responses and questions are intelligent & look like real contribution. Do not post for the sake of posting. It will give wrong impression and other forum members will look down upon you with contempt! Some will even mark you as spam leading to deletion of your account and your hopes as well.

Many SEO companies offer this service really cheap, say 1¢ per post. DO NOT fall for that. They will do more harm than any good. My advice would be that you should hire someone who (1) understands your business’s objectives and can (2) write decent English. He should really contribute in the forums to lure other readers in clicking on his signature URL.

Some of my favorite SEO Forums are :

Digitalpoint

Webmaster World

V7n Community

2. Publish Blogs / News / Press Releases & submit them in bookmarking websites - Everyone in the web community knows the importance of blog and news updates on your company/ product website. Not only it attracts search engine crawlers to visit your website more often, it also helps you generate more back links by submitting these articles on press release and bookmarking websites. Tons of bookmarking websites have sprouted up recently. And believe it or not, most of them are a good source of traffic generation for your website. The ones that I use most frequently for my clients are :

Stumbleupon

Digg

Delicious

Reddit

Mixx

Propeller

Kaboodle (for online stores)

Yahoo Buzz

Technorati

Clipmarks

There are still more than 200 bookmarking websites which you should definitely consider for this task.

3. Create your social profile & share your news update with the community – The first names that lighten up in our minds are Facebook, Twitter & Myspace. Make sure you create a public social profile for the company that you are promoting. You ought to have your Facebook Fan page, Twitter profile, Youtube profile, LinkedIn profile (of yourself and/or your clients). All the websites I just mentioned require you to sign up and they provide you a unique URL of your profile. This is your social profile. Following are must-do activities whenever you have a new blog or new story published on your website or blog -

Tweet about it on Twitter

Do a status update on Facebook & LinkedIn

Update status on Ecademy as well. Ecademy (has a lot of junk but) is still a good source of traffic once you have a strong network.

Share your blog article on discussion boards & forum of these social networks.

Flickr – “A picture is worth a thousand words” is not exactly true in the world of SEO which relies heavily on content full of words. But still Flickr stands out and can become a good source of traffic for your website. Just make sure that whenever you write an article, you add an image in your post and submit that image on your Flickr profile with apt tags and description. If you have an online store and sell products, make sure all the images of your products are also submitted on to your Flickr profile. Picasa, Photobucket & Picli are some other photo sharing networks.

Once your profile has been set up, you should start building a community by adding/inviting friends to join your network.

4. Publish & share videos and slideshows about your product or company – This is usually the one time process unless you introduce new products very often. You should create a slideshow or video that describes your company or product. Slideshows are perfect for any online store owners as you can add all your products and their description into multiple slides and share it on hundreds of video websites. Some of my favorites are -

Youtube

Vimeo

Dailymotion

Slideshare (See a sample below)

5. Yahoo Answers & similar question/answer websites – I love Yahoo Answers and On Startup Answers community where you can post any question you want and community members will respond within hours. SEO companies are using similar sites to drive traffic by maneuvering questions in such a manner that makes other members click on their URLs. It may not be the best way to get the type of traffic you want but still it is one of the widely used method these days. Again, you have to be very cautious with your language so that it does not appear as spam.

6. Article re-writing and distribution – Haven’t we covered this in point (2) above? Not really. This is about article re-writing. Numerous SEO companies are hiring writers to re-write the same articles many times in different versions and keep distributing them on hundreds of press release & bookmarking websites. It works quite often since your content is not copied and the crawlers will see it as original stuff.

7. Local business listings on search engines & yellow pages- All major search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo offer business owners to submit their business with full details of name, address, phone number etc. This helps in getting local traffic for your website. Optimizing for local search listings is the discussion of a different topic that I will publish sometime in near future. For now, you should just make sure that your business has been listed on all local listings websites. A few examples of such sites are -

Hotfrog,

Business.com

Superpages.com

These are some of the widely used “Off-page promotion” techniques by SEO Companies across the globe. Please feel free to keep your opinions on this post in the comment box below.

Keyword research is one of the most awaited topic of discussions on this blog. Tons of techniques, articles & tools are already available to help you zero in on the keywords that would bring high rankings for your website on search engines. Now, we are not going to talk about all that crap stuff today because that is really not something that a person with little or no SEO knowledge can understand anyways. So we will just stick to our motto of “It can’t be explained simpler than that“.

Let’s take the example of an online perfume store. The owner just started his business and the first thing he will do is set up a website. Then he starts wondering how can he get natural traffic from search engines? (Natural here means traffic for which you are not paying a dime). The answer is obvious – by getting his website to rank higher on search engines for the relevant terms that are most searched or most popular. But the catch here is – the more popular the term is, the more competition he will have! Finding the popularity of the search terms is very simple. I always use the Google Keyword Tool to find out an estimated search volume of terms over last month.

For e.g., the keyword “perfume” was searched for a whopping 16.5 million times in the last month. And at the same time there are ~ 50 million search results for the same. So if our website owner targets the keyword “perfume”, he will be competing with as many websites for that coveted ranking. Now that doesn’t sound like a great choice for your target keyword. Its very likely that your SEO campaign will outlive your website if you follow targeting a keyword with such immense competition.

Its advisable to go for keywords that are long tailed and not highly competitive

Let’s assume that our website owner sells perfumes by Giorgio Armani as one of his products. After doing a quick lookup, we can find that “Giorgio armani men’s perfumes” was searched ~ 15,000 times which relatively less as compared to the term “perfume” but it has considerably lesser competition, just ~ 500,000 as compared to 51 million. Now this looks like a good keyword to target. We call it a ‘long tail keyword’ where instead of using 1-2 word phrases, you try to go for longer, 4-5 word keywords as the competition grows.

Oh, and yes, while we are talking about perfumes today, I would like to share a very nice & low priced perfume store I recently purchased my armani from – Spritzworld.com. Do check it out.

The Official Google Webmaster Central Blog says, in a post published earlier this week, that the famous <meta name=”keywords”/> tag does not affect your search engine rankings. Google says it’s a waste of time and should be ignored. Doing this, you can actually save a dozen-or-so bytes per pageload! It has also mentioned in the post that it is possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it’s very unlikely since they have ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently see no need to change that policy.

Google says that it disregards the meta keyword tags in SE Rankings. Image Courtesy: wipeout44.com

So, is there a need to keep the “meta keywords” tag or should we start removing them? Einstein had famously said “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So is a lot!”

Lets see what bing has to say about “meta” tag on their webmaster blog? Rick DeJarnette from the Bing Webmaster Center Team writes

The <meta> tag’s keyword attribute is not the page rank panacea it once was back in the prehistoric days of Internet search. It was abused far too much and lost most of its cachet. But there’s no need to ignore the tag. Take advantage of all legitimate opportunities to score keyword credit, even when the payoff is relatively low. Fill in this tag’s text with relevant keywords and phrases that describe that page’s content.

In fact they have given special instructions on how you should form your meta keyword terms.

When creating keyword text, remember the following:

Choose words that may be secondary keyword terms (save the primary keywords for use in the <title> and <meta> description tags), and even include a few, commonly seen typographical errors of primary keywords, just for good measure.

Limit your keyword and key phrase text, separated by commas, to no more than 874 characters.

Don’t repeat a keyword more than 4 times among the keywords and phrases in the listl

That leaves us in a fix. Google Vs Bing. Who should we go with?

Google, which has more than 65% of market share in the search industry.

OR

Bing, which was recently reported as fastest growing search engine.

My personal opinion would be that you should keep meta keywords tag and populate a couple of your most targeted keywords while making sure that you DO NOT overstuff it. This means you are adding not more than 100 bytes of data in your web page which will take less than few milliseconds to load. Plus Google never said that this will have negative impact so there is no harm. And since they left it open that their policies may change in future which means, if they do, you do not have to start filling in again. You will be already prepared. And at the same time, you are following the guidelines by Bing and making sure that your web page is optimized for that as well.

Initial hype and Previews:

Expectant surprise then mere disappointment – those are what one encounters when one uses the Yahoo Search Pad. Launched as a free service, with no content downloads, installations or other hassles required, this service generated a lot of hype and subsequently, a lot of expectations; especially after the marketing stalwarts at Yahoo unveiled a demo video earlier this year, portraying Yahoo Search Pad as the ultimate consumer-friendly search assistant. Yahoo Search Pad has been marketed as a search engine notepad that can assist you with your researches (searches on specific topics) on the Internet by automatically saving notes for you, so can leave the research midway and resume it later, organize your notes, and share all the research jottings you have taken down, with family and friends. Yes, it is that basic a product. Wondering why nobody thought of it earlier?

Well, people have. We have had some marginally successful attempts like Google Notebook, Jeteye, among others at creating search engine notepads. But, the innovation that gets Yahoo Search Pad at the top of the product chain is the linking of Search Pads with Social Networking websites. I mean, who wouldn’t want to research stuff when you can publish it and show-off your glorious findings on the Internet, to all those who care to see?

The Yahoo Search Pad helps you in your research by saving it for later reference. Image Courtsey: tothetech.com.

Features and Usage:

One of the major benefits of using the Yahoo Search Pad is its instinctive ease of use. Just log on to the Yahoo Search Engine, sign in to your Yahoo ID, click on the small ‘pen and pad’ icon you see below the header on the top right on the search results page, create a new notebook and you’re all set to get down to researching! As you research, this wonder of a notepad will automatically detect the topics of your research and save addresses of URLs related to your research accompanied by snapshots of those webpages. You can also manually add text notes and organize your notes bulk in any fashion you see fit. The Search Pad will then try to search for the references of your text notes and will automatically label them with URLs, if the text comes from a popular page. And finally, when you are done editing and organizing your research, you can share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Delicious, providing others the opportunity to browse through and gain from your research. Unfortunately, the wonderment ends here, and disappointment follows.

A Search Pad notebook: Organize your notes and share them with the world! Image Courtsey: venturebeat.com.

Criticism:

For all its intelligence in automatically finding out what you’re searching for, Yahoo! Search Pad seems to have a simple algorithm built into it: If the researcher is spending more than a minute at a particular URL, note it down! This will become more clear the from the following experiment I performed, which gave a result that can be recreated with ease:

I researched on a popular PC video game called Batman: Arkham Asylum. I visited a generous list of popular game reviewing websites like IGN, Gamespot, 1up, and others, and made manual text notes on the Search Pad by copy-pasting content from most of those websites, to test if the Search Pad could automatically find references for them. The Search Pad was mildly efficient at this, only finding correct URLs for some 30-40% of the manual notes taken down. This exercise continued for some 7-10 minutes and through it, I had thoroughly ‘trained‘ the Search Pad into knowing what I was researching on. Now, to test the Pad’s Artificial Intelligence, I opened YouTube in one of the open tabs and searched for ‘Funny Cats’. I sat through the 2:46 minutes of the amusing first video that appeared on the search results. I then looked in the Search Pad to check whether it was confused through the abrupt change of research topics. To my mild surprise, the Search Pad had recorded the Video URL in a long list of URLs that had Batman written all over them and had nothing to do with humor or, well, cats. I again searched for Goobuntu, an unrelated topic, and took a minute reading the wiki page that was first to show up in the results. Needless to say, the Search Pad had again recorded the wiki URL in a notebook that was filled with references from an entirely disconnected topic.
It becomes clear from the above exercise that the Yahoo Search Pad can get confused as easily as it can help you with your research. Relying on the Search Pad to ‘artificially know’ what you want is a hope in vain. The Pad is simply a book keeping tool when you’re indulging in Extremely specific researches (also, the Yahoo website help section provides no information whatsoever on whether the Search Pad will work Search Engines other than Yahoo). And I would want echo what I said earlier, the prospect of sharing your researches on Social Networks remains the most powerful feature of this Pad.

Verdict:

The Yahoo Search Pad is definitely a inventive offering with ambitious thought behind it, but it fails to implement much of that ambitiousness. We also think that the Search Pad might not witness explosive popularity but will influence and force the software industry big wigs to think and re-think their ideas behind the Next Gen of Search Assistants.
